Biographical Text

Clara B. Arthur was a suffragist who helped co-found the Michigan Equal Suffrage Association. In 1906, she was elected president of the association. Arthur was also known as the "Mother of the Playground Movement," promoting the building of playgrounds and advocating against child labor. She was a member of the National Child Labor Committee and the Michigan Federation of Women's Club, chairing both the industrial and child labor committees. Arthur also helped found the Detroit Anti Tuberculosis Society.

Arthur married James Arthur in 1884. They had three children together. Arthur died in 1929.
