NEW YORK. Nov. 6, 1909.
My dear Miss Addams:-
I have your letter of the second and am glad to know that the Hull House book is so near completion. When we last heard from Mr. Phillips we understood that he wished it to run through the summer and this was satisfactory to us, for we believe that with a book of this character the early fall is, on the whole, the best time for publishing. If it must be published in spring, it ought certainly not be delayed beyond the middle or latter part of April and to make sure of this date we ought to have the MS. before the first of February. I hope, however, that you will decide to postpone publication until the fall and so give us plenty of time to make the book in the best manner.
I am very sorry to learn that the copies of "The Spirit of Youth and the City Streets" for the Chicago papers were delayed. They were sent out at the same time as the New York copies and we are investigating to find why they were not delivered at once. I have written to the editors of some of the Chicago papers to apologize and ask their aid in investigating the cause.
I am
Very sincerely yours
for THE MACMILLAN COMPANY
