Biographical Text

Stephen Samuel Wise was born in Budapest and immigrated to the United States with his parents when he was an infant. Wise began his rabbinacal career as an assistant of the synagogue and was shortly promoted to the head position. In 1907, he established his own synagogue named "The Free Synagogue." Wise served as the president of the American Jewish Congress and was a rabbi of Temple Beth Israel, based in Oregon. He was the founder of the Oregon Conference of Charities and Corrections and was an advocate of Zionism.

Wise married Louise Waterman Wise in 1900. They had two children. Wise died in 1949.
