Biographical Text

Clara Delafield Sturges Johnson was a pacifist and innovative educator. She and her husband spent time traveling Europe before settling in California in 1912. In the same year, they founded the Francis W. Parker School. The private school was located in San Diego and took a different approach to education. Students were taught in a way that focused less on reading and writing and more on doing things in hands-on. In 1915, Johnson also served on the educational committee for the San Diego exhibition. Johnson was anti-war and committed herself to various pacifist causes and was involved in a number of peace societies that spoke out against the United States militaristic action.

Johnson married William Templeton Johnson in 1905. The couple divorced in 1931 after she claimed that he deserted her. They had four children, Winthrop T., Al Delafield, Alan W., and Katharine. She died in 1969.
