My dear Mr. McCarthy: --

We had a great deal of discussion pro and con about the Legislative Reference Bureau in New York and I think that Dean Lewis' letter represented it quite faithfully. We are all hoping that you can direct its destinies. I wish you could have heard some of the appreciative things which were said of you there.

This attempt to democratize the funds of the Progressive Party has its disadvantages, but I believe it is the right thing to do.

Always faithfully yours,

Jane Addams [signed]

Chas. McCarthy, Esq.,
Madison.
