Biographical Text

Francis J. Heney was a lawyer and politician. He attended the University of California while teaching night school, and then worked for a short time as a principal in Idaho. He then attended law school in San Francisco and was admitted to the bar in 1883. In 1884, Heney moved to Arizona and worked as a lawyer and owned a cattle business. From 1893 to 1895 he was Attorney General of the Arizona Territory, and he also served as the U.S. District Attorney for the District of Oregon. Heney worked on many famous cases, such as the Oregon Land Fraud scandal and the San Francisco graft trials. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1912 and ran for U.S. Senator from California as a Progressive in 1914.

Heney married Rebecca Wentworth McMullin in 1906. She died in 1911, and Heney remarried to Edna I. Van Winckle in 1915. Heney died in 1937.
