My dear Mr. Johnson:-

I have already promised so much writing that I find it utterly impossible to write one word for the open letter. I am afraid I cannot get it to you in time for the February number. Let me send it at the earliest possible moment and with the understanding that you will put it into the magazine whenever it is convenient provided of course that you care for it. I am sorry to have marched up the hill so vigorously and then apparently to march down again, but I am unusually busy this fall and have less time than usual for any writing. I wanted to do this open letter so much and regret that I have not had time for it.

Sincerely yours,

Jane Addams [signed]

Mr. Robert Underwood Johnson,
New York
