Biographical Text

Mari Ruef Hofer attended Columbia University and dedicated her career to children's studies. She became a specialist of the "kindergarten song," believing that music and singing had a profound effect on youth development and self-esteem. In addition to music, Hofer was the chairman of the committee on games for girls and a playground advocate and leader in the growing field of playground work. She did not want girls to pick up masculine habits and frequently focused on incorporating dance into the schools. Hofer traveled nationally to give lectures or teach classes on the role of music, playgrounds, and dancing in schools.

Hofer died in 1929.
