My dear Mr. Latham:

I suppose the initial mistake was my consent to put The Excellent Becomes the Permanent into the Religious Department. I am afraid that the list of orthodox publications which you send me represent exactly the people who would not care for it. On the other hand, readers of The New Republic, The Nation, etc., might like it. However, as I have consented to the classification, I should have no ground for complaint. But I have never had such a curious experience with a book -- literally dozens of people calling me up about it asking if there is such a book, of which they have heard a rumor.

Of course the New York Times -- almost the only lay publication on your list -- had a very interesting review, but I cannot imagine Zion's Herald or The Christian Endeavor World stimulating its sale!

Thanking you for your kind letter, I am

Faithfully yours,

J. A. [initiated]
