Miss Jane Addams, social worker, and Mrs. Gertrude Howe Britton, a former school board member, appeared before the building and grounds committee of the board of education yesterday to urge construction of a combination junior and technical high school on the site of the present Hebrew Institute at Lytle and Taylor streets. Mrs. W. S. Hefferan, a member of the committee, suggested that the project be included in the 1928 building program.
Miss Addams cited statistics to prove that the suggested location was near the population center of the city and that the surrounding schools were inadequate.
A junior high school, she argued, would induce the children, who are largely of Italian and Mexican parentage, to continue their schooling beyond the age of 14.
