[image: Jane Addams] Jane Addams, of Hull House in Chicago, is generally conceded to know what she is talking about when she talks at all. She is one social worker who does not hesitate to dig up unpleasant facts and wave them in the public face as found. Contributions to Hull House may fall off, and plot-scenters hurl themselves on her trail, but she barges ahead.

In a recent magazine article, Miss Addams tells of some facts she has dug up on streets where people live and sweat and are themselves because they haven't the money to be otherwise.

Among the people talked with was a club of young boys, most of them whom were out of work at the time. They were asked what they wanted to be.

You'd be surprised, says Miss Addams, to know how many of them answered: "A bootlegger."

Asked why, their answers boiled down to this: "Because bootleggers make big money, have fine clothes, and big cars. Even if they do get caught, they can buy themselves free."
