My dear Miss Smith --

I am afraid that the people whom I really know at Bar Harbor are the very ones who take The Survey and that most of the others would be supremely indifferent.

There are a great many semi philanthropic meetings, -- I attended one for the Red Cross yesterday, will go to another tomorrow -- that were founded upon fashionable names and houses and most of the approaches are made that [page 2] way, I suspect that trying to see individuals would amount to very little.

I am sorry to be discouraging but this is my honest opinion.

We live three miles out at Hull's Cove -- which by the way is our address, the Bar Harbor captain delayed the delivery of your letter -- and I am afraid could not be of much use to you.

If you decide after all to come, of course, you will let me know.

Faithfully yours,

Jane Addams
