Jane Addams to Mildred Scott Olmsted, April 3, 1928

WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FOR PEACE AND FREEDOM

Hull-House,
Chicago,
April 3, 1928.

My dear Mrs. Olmsted,

I was mortified to send such a reply to your telegram this morning but I really cannot make out when Miss Daugaard is coming. She had hoped to be in Chicago in April or May and I have written her urging her to come to Washington for the Annual Meeting, but I know nothing definite. Anne Martin is the only one who could help us. Her address is, as you know, Mission Street at Eleventh, Carmel-By-The-Sea, Calif. I should think it is most unlikely that she would be in Pennsylvania by April 17th.

In regard to the Hawaiian pamphlets I have decided not to issue anything because of the difficulty of not coinciding with the plans of the Hawaiian Committee. Simply the statement on the leaflet is all that I feel safe to issue. I am almost sure of Tano Jōdai, the Secretary of the Japanese Section and hope for members from China, New Zealand and Australia, but it is so uncertain that I am unwilling to urge our American members to come to Honolulu and find a lot of other Americans there. We have quite a vigorous local branch and I am sure we can have something in the way of a meeting on the 20th, more than that I am afraid to [page 2] venture upon. The place is too remote for any Europeans and the Japanese and Chinese women who are members of our organization will be very few. I think if you send out the leaflet to your members marking the Honolulu Conference it is all I am willing to vouch for.

I sent the leaflets for the Summer School to Dorothy Detzer with the understanding that she would send them to the branches as far as they lasted. I have sent to England for more but they have not yet come. The Summer School is in England at Westhill near Birmingham from July 27th to August 10th.

I am now planning to come to Washington. I have just received a letter from Emily Balch which sounds as if she would be willing to be made Chairman of the Section for the United States!

Hastily yours,

Jane Addams [signed]
