Miss Jane Addams, head of Hull House and noted social worker, expressed the belief that the Countess Cathcart should be permitted to enter the United States. Miss Addams said:
"The Countess of Cathcart was legally divorced four years ago according to English law. The matter was settled by the courts of that land. The countess was not deprived of her rights as an English citizen. Her country did not discriminate against her for that reason. I do not believe that we should bar her."
"The whole thing in this case is the barring of an English citizen for a breach of morality that four years ago occasioned a divorce action in the English courts. We go rather far when we attempt to judge the conduct of those of another country who have already been tried and judged for violations of the legal code of their own land."
