Harriet Eliza Merriam Van der Vaart to Jane Addams, March 18, 1928

[Taneycomo] Mo -- March 18 -- 1928

Dear Miss Addams:

I think you will be interested to know that I am back in my little cottage home in the "Ozarks" and that my little venture here seems opening to some usefulness. The people are most friendly and help me in all ways.

Since Neighborhood House was taken from me I have been seeking to find some corner where my little services were needed and I am very grateful for the opportunity that seems given me here, and may I also say dear Miss Addams that my greatest gratitude is to you who have always been such an inspiration to Anna, Grace and me.

Anna understood this most and heartily responded. Grace greatly reverenced you.

I have been a dull alone pupil but my vision has somewhat cleared in the last few years and it seems to me  [page 2] now that only a poet could rightly express the width and the depth and the beauty of the inspiration that has come to us through an association with you.

I trust I may be able to carry a little of this "inspiration" into this community.

I remember with appreciation the morning Miss Frost spent with me helping to select tools for the boys here. The gentlemen who is to take charge of this work with the boys thinks they are the best of the kind.

Gratefully and lovingly your pupil --

Harriet M Van der Vaart
