My dearest of Friends --
I was delighted with the photograph of which I already had a small one framed which now goes to another lucky settlement while I keep the big one for myself. You see how unselfish almost forty years of settlement work have made me! for this is our 39th winter at Hull-House and I am beginning to believe that I shall round out my 40th year. I recall that Canon Barnett once said that 7 years in a settlement was perhaps enough, if so I have fearfully overdone it! [page 2]
Ellen Starr has just gone to New Mexico to the dry air of Santa Fe -- to recover from a prolonged bronchitis, I am compromising by sleeping mostly at my friend's Mary Smith's, on the North side but keeping regular hours at the House. It seems to work out very well and I hope in time to wiggle back.
And now dearest Lady about you! How are you and what are your plans for the U.S.A.?
Next summer, in August, I have promised to preside at a Pan Pacific meeting of Women in Honolulu -- not a peace congress this time but a general one to be attended by a good many Oriental women who are eager for all sorts of help. But we will be [page 3] back by the end of September and if you should come to us in the fall of 1928, it would give us all a great deal of pleasure & of profit.
I am sorry that I am such a bad correspondent -- even slow about thanking you for a Christmas present which I liked very much -- but it does not mean that I am not an ardent and devoted friend, most grateful that you write me such dear letters and committed to you with such a curious sense of unity and understanding.
