Biographical Text

Thomas William Allinson dedicated his career to advocacy, social work, and promoting public welfare programs. He came to Chicago from New York and became a member and secretary of the Chicago Ethical Society. Allinson then became the supervisor and head resident of the Henry Booth House, a community center, at the turn of the nineteenth century. He later became a social worker and resident of the near-by Hull-House settlement, where he worked with Jane Addams. While there, he was a chairman for the Finance Committee of the Illinois Progressive Committee and a secretary for the board working to put together Chicago's Child Welfare Exhibit. Allinson also worked for the Department of Public Welfare of Chicago. In 1911, he co-founded and sat on the conservation committee of the Prairie Club of Chicago, which sought to protect local dunes and orchestrated nature walks. He was also one of the first members of the Chicago chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Allinson married Alice Minerva Dow in 1892. They had one son together. Allinson died in 1936.
