Biographical Text

Jessie Lloyd O'Connor was an American journalist, feminist, peace activist and an heiress to the Chicago Trribune newspaper fortune. She was the daughter of William and Lola Maverick Lloyd. She graduated from Smith College in 1925 and became a labor reporter for the Federated Press, covering stories in the United States for the London Daily Herald. She covered the impact of the Great Depression on working people and wrote about the Communist Party before becoming disillusioned with it. She lived at Hull-House from 1939 to 1944 and worked for the YWCA Industrial Board, the ACLU, and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. In the 1950s, she was targeted by the House Un-American Activities Committee and in the 1960s she demonstrated against the Vietnam War and other causes.

She married Harvey O'Connor in 1930. The couple adopted two children, Steven and Kathleen, in the 1940s. She was widowed in 1987 and died in 1989.
