to Jane [Addams]
July 4/1927
The worst criminals are young men and boys [trained] by prominent men, to sell [fake securities] -- one company sold 4,200,000, with liabilities 4,459,000 in 1921-1925. The state was asked to investigate this -- all Bank and the Bar Association knew of this transaction. The Waukegan [Bank] was closed. 100,000. of the country's money. Other [Banks] lost in this confidence game.
These [young] men are educated to rob the public and become Bank and payroll [robbers], and [confidence] men. They know the prominent man that send them out must protect them.
One of the prominent mens plant was [robbed]. The paper did not say what was taken away?
Some of those [men] are rich and give large sums of money to charity to advertise themselves.
I know most of the prominent men and some of the workers.
One group of prominent men, there is over 30 of them Bankers, Brokers, lawyers, merchants, and [con men.]
One of the men [said] I am protected by a trust & he made [his] money selling to working people, and [its] the Bank protects the confidence workers who [robbed] them.
I came to Chicago, 1884 and am a member of the Federation of labor. (I know men). (a crook always stands straight; with hands closed). A good man is not as straight [has] hands open. [page 2]
I am writing to you that you may know something of the prominent criminal or protected crime.
It's the [duty] of the states attorney to stop this and bring them to court? Why not.
All men who take part in fraudulent deals have [violated their] obligations to the U.S.A. are not qualified to [vote] for our next president.
[Senator] Reed said the law does not bridle the truth.
