Dear Miss Addams
I have intended writing and sending this little check for a long time. But I have had much to prevent writing. Columbia University bought the house I was in and one next -- and it seemed best -- in the [page 2] uncertainty not to extend my lease so I hurriedly moved May 1st. Am with my daughter now with goods stored until I decide about my "old-age-home." Meanwhile, I am to [illegible] an important "Institute" at Lake Chautauqua this summer and shall spend July and August there. Then in late September I shall arrive in your City, Chicago, and spend five or six weeks there. Meadville Theological School is moved to the Chicago [page 3] University bodily and I am giving a little time this fall to helping organize the courses especially for women. I am using these last years of active work to tie up threads of many-sided effort so that those [who] come after me will find things a bit-better. Meanwhile, dear friend, I send with my bit of a check a great love and a heap of good wishes for the Dublin Meeting. How I wish I could be with you all! But it is [page 4] necessary, made more so than ever by my surprise gift on my Birthday, that I help in some long-range bits of work to try and finish a little better a too-scattered social devotion. I was not able to get to Cleveland [although] I had planned to do so.With fond love
Anna Garlin Spencer.
