[Miss] Jane Addams

Dear [Miss] Addams:

I was so pleased to read of that banquet in Chicago in recognition of your service, while it was somewhat embarrassing for you -- at the same time it is nice to have one's efforts appreciated.

My few months at Hull House under the direction of Prof. Graham Taylor has always been a real helpful experience, not the least of which was your gracious handling of that polyglot crowd.

I was not able to render much service, I was a rather crude proposition and yet one tragic story of a girl of the streets, taken in by an Irish Catholic woman, her death, the little service at the Ewing S. Chapel, the flowers and [page 2] the service by the Hull House women, the scene at the grave -- all of which I shared in has always been a help to me. It gave me a new view of the Roman Catholic faith and opened the way for some wonderful friends with of the Catholics. I remember [Miss] Starr, [Miss] Lathrop -- I saw her at the Playground Congress at Grand Rapids some years since, also Mrs. Florence Kelley -- I saw her several years ago at Toledo Ohio.

Though I didn't help much, I received a lot. How fitting that your recognition and Dr. Taylor's came so near together! I wrote him a letter of appreciation, where I described the tragic background of my life, he was amazed to think I had hewed out even the mediocre results that have been mine.

A most checkered career, seven years in a law office, 11 years in a Community Church. Gone broke twice, a wonderful wife, a fine group of children two boys and two girls. My oldest boy John S. is located at Wooster Ohio in connection with the Ohio Agricultural Experiment station. He is a scientist, his big job is the attack upon the Corn Borer. My friend, [Pres.] Raymond of the Armour Institute, asked to know about his work especially last week. He says Illinois people are very much concerned about it and so I sent a letter yesterday to have him put his name on the regular mailing list, to get the bulletins as issued.

The Lord has surely favored you in your splendid work all these years. May many more be added. You note by the letter head, I am chairman of the Community Church Board. I am asking Dr. Jordan to send you a copy of the Community [Churchman], [illegible]. It [written up right margin] has article on Int'l] [illegible] W. A. Cutler
