My dear Mr. Schwartz:

I am very sorry indeed that I am obliged to go East a few days before the dinner in honor of Miss Addams, and can not get back in time to attend that dinner. I regret this very sincerely.

I think that there is nobody in Chicago whom I both respect and admire with my head and with my heart more sincerely than Miss Jane Addams. I hope that the dinner will be a grand success and that she will derive as much pleasure from it as those who attend. Believe me,
