January 15, 1927.
Dear Miss Addams:
Mrs. Ewing and I would give a great deal if we could be present at the Civic Dinner which is to be given in your honor on January 20th.
Be assured that our thoughts will be with you at that time, and our wishes for your continued health, usefulness, and happiness. We are very happy about this spontaneous movement of Chicago's best citizens to do you public honor.
Dr. and Mrs. Wilder came a week ago to spend this month with us, and Dr. Wilder, who suffered a nervous breakdown a few months ago, says that it is doing wonders for him already.
We had a joyful time with our daughters here during the Holiday season. Please tell Miss Smith that our only regret in that connection was that it did not seem advisable for us to attend her niece's wedding.
We hope to see both of you down here some time this winter.
Yours sincerely,
Charles Hull Ewing [signed]
