Miss Amelia Sears,
Chicago.
Dear Miss Sears:
I am in receipt of Mr. Chandler's letter of Dec. 29th, regarding the dinner to be held in honor of Miss Addams, and I feel honored of course, to be associated in any way with the plan and [enclose] card duly signed.
My progress toward recovery since my recent operation has been so slow, there would be no opportunity of my attending the dinner, as the Doctor has ordered me South. This is one of the privileges of growing old and I am appreciating all the emoluments that go along with old age. Just the same, I don't like it and am protesting with all my might, but it don't seem to do any good.
Yours very truly,
William D. Allen. [signed]
