Dear Miss Addams:
I can't tell you how disappointed Mrs. Rosenthal and I were that we were unable to attend the dinner given in your honor. Unfortunately, Mrs. Rosenthal has a severe cold which she contracted on returning from abroad and has been under medical treatment, and the doctor has advised that she does not go out in crowds, and especially at night.
I would have been happy to have been one of that splendid group of men and women who attempted by their presence to show the great love they have for you. There is no higher asset that can be placed on the ledger of life than that of citizenship, and there is no one anywhere in my large acquaintance that more typifies that ledger entry than the name of Jane Addams.
May God bless you for all the blessings you have given to others and for the inspiration your life is to the great mass of citizenship of the nation.
With my best wishes for your future health and happiness, I remain
Sincerely yours,
Benjamin J Rosenthal [signed]
