My dear Mr. [Maddox],

I am sending you a box of one hundred and fifteen books, fifty of them quite new, which I had an opportunity to buy from a friend who is giving up his plan to open a book shop. They are [sociological] in a very general sense, some of them only near-[sociological] but they are all standard and I hope will be useful. I am very happy to send them for a good measure on the library gift.
