Mr. Laird Bell
134 S. La Salle St.
Chicago, Ill.

My dear Mr. Bell:

Prohibition in its effects on family and neighborhood life is the subject of a study being made by the National Federation of Settlements in every state in the union.

Chicago settlements and social centers have already sent in valuable material for this study to be incorporated in the national publication which will be edited by Mrs. Martha Bensley Bruère of New York, who is director of this study.

Some of us feel that it will be most valuable for the settlements to give a well considered opinion on this most vexed problem of our national life, and we are most anxious that Chicago should do its full share.

Miss Lillian D. Wald of New York is chairman of the committee on which representatives are serving from various sections of the country.

We are asking a few friends of settlements to share in the financial budget of the study. Chicago is asked to raise $1500 of the total budget of $7000. One half of our share is in hand.

We very much need your [cooperation] in helping to raise the remaining $700, for which Chicago is responsible. Checks of any amount are welcome, and should be made payable to Charles Cooper, Treasurer, and sent to Miss L. D. Taylor, Chicago Commons, 955 W. Grand Avenue, who will forward them to Mr. Cooper.

Hoping that we may have your help in this practical research, we are,

Sincerely yours,
