Dear Dear DEAR
Every body thought I had cold in my eyes -- but you know I had not.
I am disappointed down to my toes, up to my white hair, across my stout body -- & in that secret place where your real you lives. I have [page 2] always hated Ireland & her false charming, lying, seductive ways, & now she has captured you I add fierce jealousy to my previous emotions.
I think to gauge the feeling of England about America is far more important for you to do than to see more of Ireland, for really both countries need help to clear these prickly hedges of misunderstanding. I am your sad, cross, disappointed, semi-angry wholly loving friend
