Miss Jane Addams,
β„… S. S. VOLENDAM,
New York.

Dear Miss Addams:

We have just held in Chicago a most remarkable conference of speakers and teachers who are dealing with the problem of international relationships. Among the delegates were those whose views were almost as far apart as it seemed possible for them to be, and yet we reached a perfectly wonderful agreement which was adopted in the last session unanimously. I enclose a copy of it.

Out of this conference and several previous events we have been made aware of the need for a comprehensive book which will outlines the various ideals for international cooperation which are being advocated. This book will be valuable for those who want to be informed upon the international situation also for material for speakers who are dealing with this topic on convention platforms and for study groups.

The purpose of this hurried letter is to say that the Editorial Board, of which Prof. Shotwell is the Chairman, had planned to ask you to write one of the chapters for this book. There are twenty chapters. I am enclosing an outline for your information.

I just learned that you are sailing today and so I am sending you this information. We are very eager to have you write on the chapter entitled β€œThe Hopes We Inherit.”

I know how busy you are but there is no one who can do this quite so well and the book will be incomplete unless we have your cooperation; therefore I hope you will be able to comply. If you will send the manuscript to us, even in rough form, we will be very glad to copy it here in the office and take care of details of [proofreading], etc.

Wishing you a most pleasant journey and a profitable and pleasant sojourn, together with a safe return, I am,
Yours cordially,
Henry A. Atkinson. [signed]
