My dear Miss Blake:
I am delighted that you are settled at International House and in the midst of the summer school. I am not however as you think, responsible for your appointment. The statement in the Pax International was also a surprise to me although it pleased me very much.
The time of the school as Madeline Doty will tell you I have from the first considered too long as we have never had it more than a month and in some respects an intensive three weeks is better. However, I was very glad to concur with her judgment in the matter when she advocated six weeks. I plan to be there for the last three weeks only and to do all I can at that time. I reached this decision for two reasons -- first, that I am going abroad largely as a guest of my friend, Mary Smith. She, as well as myself is anxious to see something of Ireland and we will go for two weeks after the affairs in Dublin are over. Second, because I do not believe I am up to seeing people and talking so long as the six weeks school would imply and I would do better to arrive a little late and put in “all I am worth.” Perhaps it will be a good thing to have fresh people to come along in the middle of the school. In the meantime, I have intended to write all of this to Madeline Doty and perhaps you will be willing to share this letter with her.
I am as sorry as I can be that you are both so [overworked] and am sure from now on any stenographic or other help you may need [can be] secured and put upon the general expense of the International Congress and International summer school as we are starting out for a special fund. I will send Miss Doty the literature regarding it in a day or two when it comes from the printers and I hope very much to relieve her at least from the responsibility and worry of special money getting. It always seems difficult when we start out for a new Congress but we have always succeeded in [page 2] getting enough not only to defray the Congress and school but to have something left over, for the running of the International Office in the meantime so I am starting out with the confidence that we will have at least the usual good luck. It seems to me the suggestions you have in regard to the summer school are most valuable.
I am getting this off hastily this morning and will write in a day or two. We are very grateful to you for going over and helping out in this situation.
