Dear Miss Balch,
Here I am in the fascinating old Maison International trying to get the hang of things so that I may be able to help Madeleine Doty. She has turned over to me the appalling task of arranging the Summer School. I shall need all the advice and help that you can give me.
I am writing [today] to Mme. Jouve asking for her advice and help as to the scholarships and how to advertise the school in France. Will you please tell me what you know about the scholarship, whether there is any money already in hand for it, how much is allowed for a scholarship, and how many should be awarded. Also what are the rules for granting a scholarship, and who makes the decision as to who is to receive one, and anything else that I should know.
Professor Zimmern's courses are not yet arranged, probably will not be completely arranged until June, but it is definitely settled that they will be in the morning every day. He will have an elementary course [occupying] a week with a resumé at the end of the week by himself. There will also be a longer course much more intensive for those who wish to enter into it more [illegible] deeply. The lectures in our school could be repeated the first two weeks just as Professor Zimmern's lectures will be, thus one set of students could go to Prof. Zimmern's lectures the first week and to ours the second, while a second set of students go to our lectures the first week and to Prof. Z's lectures the second. That seems to be an excellent idea, does it not?
You have written somewhat doubtfully about coming to the summer school. Indeed, dear Miss Balch, it is your duty to come. I am absolutely green at this sort of thing, and I cannot undertake to do all this without your help and guidance. I know that it is asking a great deal of you but it is necessary to ask it. Who but you can give the practical lessons that you have outlined so admirably to Madeleine? And they are so much needed. Then you must use your powers of persuasion to make Miss Addams come too. Then we shall truly have a Summer School worth having.
Have you arranged with any other speakers to be here this year? Do write me as fully as you can, giving me all the advice and help that you can.
I arrived here late Saturday afternoon, just in time for dinner, so I have not yet been here three days. I have been reading files of letters and trying to get the feel of things here. I have brought my little Corona with me but I am not at all expert for I have never used it myself before. My trunk came yesterday afternoon so I am quite established now. As you doubtless [page 2] perceive, I am having trouble with my ribbon. It is very trying to be green!
The Maison is most attractive. Madeleine did not know when I was to arrive, so she was away when I arrived, but Miss Hattinga gave me a most hearty welcome, and made me at home at once.
I shall await the mail with eagerness that will bring me a letter from you. May it come soon!
Yours affectionately,
P.S. As I go over the files I am amazed at what Madeleine has accomplished. This office should have another really efficient person to do the foreign language work. The three tasks of arranging all the affairs of the convention and raising money for it, of doing the same thing for the Summer School, and editing the "Pax International" are each sufficient to keep a very intelligent human being thoroughly occupied. It is no wonder that Madeleine is looking tired and worn. I shall do my best to get her a little rest, for she needs it.Madeleine has sent 1000 circulars like the one enclosed, and 500 multigraphed letters to the heads of schools and colleges to go with the circulars asking them to help to advertise the Summer School, to Miss Detzer to send out. Do you know whether this has been done? I ask because I hope that it has, for it is even now late to reach the teachers for they make their plans early as you doubtless know. Did Miss Detzer say anything about the article I asked her to send to educational publications? It was mainly fresh unpublished statements from clergy of the three dominant faiths, and from educators asking teachers to work for peace. I do hope she has done this.
