Miss Jane Addams,
Hull House,
Chicago, Ill.

Dear Miss Addams:

We naturally turn to you to take part in a lively symposium -- brief, informal, but searching, we hope -- on the question Fred Howe raises in his autobiography:

"What has become of the pre-war radicals?"

Or its counterpart, "Who succeeds them and where?"

What we want is five or six hundred words by January first.

It's a gift we are asking for -- a bit of service for the common good in these years of flux. But if you haven't the book, we can send you one through the courtesy of the publishers, who, of course, jumped at the idea when we told them we had this adventure in mind. There is a new generation coming on; we are reaching some of them through the Survey Graphic. It is bound to be of help to them to know not only where Fred Howe "comes out" -- but where you do.

Will you write at once and say yes; and let us know if you haven't the book already at hand.

Sincerely,

Editor
