Miss Jane Addams,
Social Settlement of Hull House,
Chicago, Ill.

Dear Madam: --

We have been much interested in the preliminary announcement of the new series of articles which you are to contribute to McClure's Magazine, dealing with the social evil. You are no doubt aware of the fact that we published Kauffman's "House of Bondage" and we are to bring out this fall another book by him based on the series of articles which have been running in Leslie's Weekly. Of course the publication of these books has put us in touch with various organizations and people interested in settlement work all over the country, and we believe that our experience with Kauffman's book would enable us to do full justice to another book on the same subject.

We have, of course, known of your great work in Chicago for a long time and it would be a great satisfaction to us to be able to publish this forthcoming book for you, provided you have not already arranged for it. If you will consider the proposition, I shall be glad to write you at greater length.

Very truly yours,

J. H. Coit [signed]
