LIBER AMICORUM
ROMAIN ROLLAND [page 2]
On the 29th of January 1926 ROMAIN ROLLAND will celebrate his SIXTIETH BIRTHDAY. We, to whom his life represents the most passionate personification of the European thought of our days, as well as a connecting link for the whole of humanity, believe that the moment has come now to unite in a joint greeting the friends of the man whose whole existence has ever been devoted to friendship. It is our desire to give an opportunity to each of his friends to convey to him on that day words of remembrance and of gratitude, which, gathered together in a book, will be handed over to him on his sixtieth birthday.
If it is your wish to join us in our [endeavor], kindly let us have your contribution. We are sending this invitation to a very small circle of friends only, avoiding any attempt at pressure, as this would seem to us to impair that spontaneous gratitude which is due [page 3] to a man like Romain Rolland. It is not our intention to obtain a long list of famous names. The book is to be a lasting monument of gratitude, a manifestation of friendship, offered to a man who holds no official [honors] and whose one distinction is the spirit, which alone he serves.
If you wish to join us in this homage we beg to tender you our thanks in advance.
The book will be published by the Rotapfel-Verlag Zurich. The French, English and German contributions will probably be published in their original languages; others will be translated. The publishers will place any possible [net]-proceeds at the disposal of an institution, which is in course of being founded, and which will work on lines inspired by Romain Rolland.
