Miss Jane Addams,
800 S. Halsted Street,
Chicago, Illinois.

Dear Miss Addams:

As Chairman of the National Committee to make the final awards in the Prize Essay Contest of the American Chemical Society, I am glad to inform you that the state awards have been made and that it is now the duty of this Committee to designate the best paper written on each of the six subjects, the writers of which are to receive four-year scholarships to Yale or Vassar.

The National Committee has been divided into six groups, one for each subject, and I am sending you herewith three essays which a special committee of the Division of Chemical Education of the American Chemical Society considers to be the best on this subject, these having been chosen from the forty-nine awarded first place in the respective states and the District of Columbia by state committees appointed for the purpose. For your information, but not necessarily for your guidance, the rating which this committee gave these three essays is indicated.

We should like to have your judgment at your early convenience as to the order in which these papers should be rated, it being understood that you are free to consult others in reaching a decision. Your rating on these papers, together with that of other members of your group, will determine the award of the scholarships for this subject.

A stamped envelope is enclosed for the return of the essays and you are requested to wire H. E. Howe, 810 Eighteenth St., N.W., Washington, D.C., collect, your decision, which I trust can be rendered at an early date.

I am asked to express the appreciation of the Committee on Prize Essays of the American Chemical Society and [of] Mr. and Mrs. F. P. Garvan for your cooperation in forwarding this educational enterprise.

Yours faithfully,
