Pardoning Slayers.

Rock Island, Dec. 11. -- Editor The Argus: Miss Jane Addams of Chicago is making herself ridiculous, as well as dangerous, by championing the murderers of Cook County, and pleading for their pardon. She "has substituted a heart throb for a mental process." This pathologically -- sentimental lady should remember what Shakespeare wrote, "Mercy but murders, pardoning those who kill."

An execution is civic surgery. As well protest against a surgeon amputating a diseased limb that threatens the life as to make maudlin attempts to prevent a human slayer from paying the penalty for his brutal crime.
