Description

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was formed from the October Revolution of 1917, when Vladimir Lenin formed the first socialist state, and the Russian Civil War. The government of the Soviet Union was led by Lenin, until his death in 1924, and then by Josef Stalin from 1917 until 1953. Under Stalin, the Soviet Union fostered rapid industrialization, suffered widespread famines between 1930-1933, and underwent purges that stifled dissent and forced many into labor camps.

The government was made up of the Supreme Soviet, which met twice a year. This group elected a Presidium, the Supreme Court, and Council of People's Commissars who was headed by the Chairman or Premier, who held executive power.
