Biographical Text

George de Forest Brush was an artist who lived for many months in Wyoming before returning to New York. While there, he painted many interpretations of Native American life. Later, he switched to renaissance-inspired portraits, often using his wife or his children as subjects. Brush eventually moved his family to their summer home of Townsend Farm in Dublin, New Hampshire, a thriving artist colony. With his friend Abbott H. Thayer as well as his wife, Brush made headway in "protective coloration" or what is commonly known today as camouflage. Brush died in 1941.

Brush married Mary Whelpley in 1886. They had five children.
