Biographical Text

Ray Stannard Baker was born in Lansing, MI in 1870. After moving to Chicago, he joined the staff of McClure's as a muckraking journalist in 1893. In 1908, Baker and other muckrakers such as Lincoln Steffens and Ida Tarbell created The American Magazine. In that year, Baker became the first journalist to examine America's racial divide in his book Following the Color Line: An Account of Negro Citizenship in the American Democracy. Baker also wrote fiction for different magazines, as well as biographies. A close friend of Woodrow Wilson, Baker wrote 15 volumes on Wilson's life, two of them winning him the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography. He passed in Amherst, MA in 1946.
