Miss Jane Addams:
Hull House,
Chicago, Ill.
My dear Miss Addams:
Would you suggest my laying out a little plan of how you want the business meetings at the Annual Meeting conducted? Am I Chairman, or are you? Would it not be possible for you to be Chairman at my request? What reports should I write for and have on hand? I fear with traveling expenses as high as they are we are not going to have a very large meeting.
I am a little divided in my mind as to whether I should go abroad for the International Conference or whether I should stay here and work on the National problems. Of course going abroad sounds interesting but on the other hand we are getting new members who possibly need a leader. Summer is a good time to get in extra work and last and most important I have not much money and it would cramp me for a long time to take the trip. This is just between you and myself and as you know I have my passage engaged and do not need to give it up until within three weeks of sailing, but I want you to think about it and from an absolutely impersonal point of view tell me where you think my duty lies. Now that you have thrown me into this job I am thoroughly interested and while I am the Chairman I want my powers, such as they are, to count for as much as possible.
I am writing to Miss Nichols [today] asking her for the name and address of the Japanese woman you speak of, at least we can have her here for the Annual Meeting and possibly [someone] will become so interested that they will want to help pay her passage to Vienna.
No, there is not another board meeting before the Annual Meeting, if you have [something] of importance to bring before the board could we have a board meeting on Saturday as soon as you arrive, or before the regular meeting begins?
I have received from Geneva the program for the International [page 2] Summer School with the request that I let Miss Balch know how many such programs I can use. Would you wish these to be on hand at the Annual Meeting and if so, have you enough of them?
Sincerely,
Mabel H. Kittredge [signed]
↑Since writing this letter I have yours in regard to the National Security League. From all sides I get requests to get out a leaflet for schools. In fact Miss Blake (principal) has offered to help pay for it. Your letter decides me to go abroad.↓
