Biographical Text

William Mackintire Salter was an author and lecturer on philosophy, lecturing for the University of Chicago and the Ethical Culture Society. He was involved in signing the call for the 1909 National Negro Conference.

Salter married Mary Gibbens Salter in 1885. They had one child, who later died of the measles. Salter and his wife adopted Frank Gray, whose name was changed to John Randall Salter. Salter was not close with John, and after Salter tried to recruit him to the army in 1913, John ran away from the family and was thus disowned. Salter died in 1931.
