Biographical Text

Henry Mills Alden was an author and editor of Harper's Magazine. He was originally trained in theology, but decided not to pursue it as a career. He became Harper's Weekly managing editor in 1863 and took over control of Harper's Monthly in 1869, an influential position that he held until his death in 1919.

Alden married Susan Frye Alden in 1861. The couple had 3 children: Annie, Harriet, and Carolyn. After his wife's death in 1895, Alden remarried Ida Foster Murray in 1900.
