Biographical Text

Harriet Alleyne Rice was an African-American physician who started working at Hull-House around 1893. In 1901 she worked in the Hull-House branch of the Chicago Bureau of Charities, doing relief work. Rice served in French hospitals from 1915-1918 during World War I after being denied service by the Red Cross due to her race. Rice died in 1958.
