Dear Miss Addams:

You have no doubt heard that Mr. Ford has withdrawn all support from the Neutral Conference in Europe. I am very much disappointed at this because the Conference has just about come around to show its ability to do something. I hope that we can find some way of keeping Lochner in the service.

I am hoping to go to Europe when there is some evidence that I can do something there. There is certainly none visible at present.

I hope and believe that the President will see his way to keep us out of the abyss of wretchedness, wrath and humiliation which results from even the most justifiable wars.
