Biographical Text

Ellen Browning Scripps was an English-born journalist who emigrated to the United States in 1844. She became a teacher before attending Knox College and graduating in 1859 with a degree in mathematics. She taught in Illinois until the Civil War and then moved to Detroit to work with her brother, James Scripps in publishing the Detroit Evening News. She worked as a proofreader, literary editor, and wrote a ladies column for the paper. She invested in the newspaper company owned by another brother, E. W. Scropps, and built a fortune. She became a major philanthropist, supporting wildlife preservation, woman suffrage, Black colleges, women's clubs, and science and health. She donated the bulk of her fortune to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Scripps College. She died in 1932.
