Biographical Text

Madeline Wallin Sikes was a Chicago teacher and club woman who was engaged in a variety of social services, women's organizations, and political activities. Sikes was a member of the League of Cook County Women's Clubs, the National Consumer's League, the Chicago Child Saving League, the League of Women Voters, and the General Federation of Women's Clubs. Sikes was also affiliated with the Association of Collegiate Alumnae, and the Chicago Woman's Club. She involved herself in efforts to improve education and to protect women and children in the labor force. Sikes and her husband were also supporters of Hull House. She moved to Austin, TX after 1930 and took up the presidency of the Austin League of Women Voters in 1932. Sikes died in 1955.

Madeline Wallin married journalist George Cushing Sikes in 1897. They had two children, Alfred and Eleanor.
