Biographical Text

Arnold Toynbee was a British economic historian who worked to improve social conditions and living conditions for the working class. He studied political economy at Oxford University, at both Pembroke College and Balliol College, and later taught at Balliol College. Toynbee argued that universal economic laws were actually relative, and one could discover that by applying the historical method in economics. He also promoted labor unions and educated many workers in large industrial centers. He helped establish public libraries in the slum of Whitechapel, and he encouraged his students to offer free classes to workers. His ideas were influential enough that the first university settlement house, Toynbee Hall, was named in his honor.

Toynbee was married to Charlotte Atwood. Toynbee died in 1883, due to poor health brought on by exhaustion from overworking.
