My dear Miss Addams:-

I enclose a clipping from the Chicago American. I wrote the editorial. Needless to say, I put you first among the women that could be Mayor of Chicago. I really hope that you will be Mayor one day if you feel that you have the physical strength for the difficult office. It would be a splendid tribute to the women of the United States if what is really the biggest city in the country, in the real sense, should put you at the head of its affairs. Of course, you know I do not imagine that it would give you any personal satisfaction, and I do not suggest it with any idea of pleasing you. The fact is that you stand probably first among all the earnest, persistent, spiritual, working women of the United States. And it would be a very good thing for women everywhere, if the equality of the sexes could be really recognized in such a way as this.

I wish that I might see you some time, and talk about the best way of making the 350,000 circulation of the Chicago American useful to the citizen. I am in Chicago the greater part of the time at present -- although at this moment I write you on the Twentieth Century on my way to New York. I have been in Chicago more than half the time for the last six or eight months. But I have known how busy you were, and have not intruded upon you.

If you could without inconvenience allow me to see you some day for an hour or half an hour, or as many minutes as you [page 2] could spare, I should be very glad. I am very much interested in the statement which you gave to the Evening American and in which you said, "Located as I am in a district where men do not want their wives to vote."

I am going to write an editorial, based upon that statement. This is still the great trouble in this country and all over the world. MEN DO NOT WANT THEIR WIVES TO CEASE BEING THE SLAVES OF MEN. That is a fact which should be constantly repeated, until the men become ashamed of their own selfishness.

Yours sincerely,

A. Brisbane [signed]
