Biographical Text

James Keeley was born in London and raised by his mother who had been deserted by her husband. When he was sixteen he immigrated to the United States. He began working as a correspondent for the Kansas City Times, and he eventually worked his way up within the journalism field. He was the managing editor of the Chicago Tribune from 1898 to 1914, and in 1911 he became the Dean of the school of journalism at the University of Notre Dame. In 1914, Keeley bought the Chicago Record Herald and Chicago Inter Ocean, combining them into the Chicago Herald. Keeley reported on many high-profile stories, such as the Iroquois Theatre fire, the fugitive Chicago bank president Paul O. Stensland, and World War I, which he reported on directly from Europe. Keeley also was a vice-president of the Pullman Company.

Keeley married Gertrude E. Small in 1895. They had a daughter, Dorothy Aldis, a children's author and poet. Keeley died in 1934.
