Biographical Text

Frederich Nietzsche was a German philosopher whose work greatly influenced Western philosophy. In 1858 he was accepted to Schulpforta, an internationally-recognized boarding school, because of his language and music talents. While in school he worked on poems and musical compositions and led the Germania music and literature club. His career officially began when he became the youngest-ever occupant of the Chair of Classical Philology at the University of Basel in 1869 at the age of 24. In 1872 Nietzsche published his first book, The Birth of Tragedy, and in 1873 he published Philosophy in the Tragic Age of the Greeks. He published many other philosophical writings, and in 1879 he retired from Basel due to poor health he had suffered from since childhood. He was then an independent author until 1889 when he had a mental collapse and was put under clinical care. In 1898 and 1899 he had two strokes, and he became paralyzed.

Nietzsche died in 1900 after contracting pneumonia and having another stroke.
